I dont understand this so common obsession with “finding one’s own art style” and seeing inconsistent art style as a bad thing. When I see an artist whose art style varies from piece to piece I feel impressed, it’s really cool, I don’t understand why having One art style is seen as the only one true path of a Good Artist

“I wanna draw realistic but also cartoony but also with sharp shapes but also with round shapes, aaaagh I cant choose!!” You can do all yknow. It is allowed. Practicing all kinds of different things is actually pretty good

This extends beyond art as well. Don't limit yourself. Try new things. Retry old things. Experiment.

Maybe this is part of our fruitless quest for authenticity and novelty. A lot of people believe that if what you do artistically is not unique and new then it is not worthwhile. We censor ourselves because we don't want to be derivative.

The lifeguard hack

Who am I to walk up to someone at a party and introduce myself?

Who are you to start a new project?

Who are they to give a talk on the main stage?

Don’t raise your hand–someone else might have a better question. Don’t ship that work, it’s not ready…

There are endless excuses, comparisons and reasons to hold back.

Unless…

Unless you’re on lifeguard duty and someone is drowning. In that situation, even if you’re not the best lifeguard in the world, and even if the water isn’t the perfect temperature, and even if you don’t quite remember how to do the latest version of the cross-chest carry… you jump in the water.

Because it’s not for you. It’s for them.

Generosity unlocks doors inside of us.

I think Maslow’s Hierarchy dictates that, relatively speaking of course.
